In 1922 the Soviet composer Arseny Avraamov performed The Symphony of Sirens on the 5th anniversary of the Russian Revolution. It used all factory sirens in the city. Factory called their workers to the factory the same way bells were calling the worshipers to their cathedrals. Rita Jones speculates that these compositions were (also) designed to strike fear in the factory owners, the bourgeoisie.
